I am so looking forward to it. Theresa and I have ten days coming up where we can unwind, explore, and get out of our normal routine.
As I look back on my career, I have always used my vacation as an escape from my job. A chance to put the rigors of business out of my mind, and focus on rest.
However, this one is different. You see, I don’t want to get away from my work. As a matter of fact, I plan on writing while we travel.
Seth Godin in his book Tribes describes a scenario where he was on vacation in Jamaica checking his email in the lobby of a hotel. A passerby mentioned to her partner how sad it was that Seth was checking his email. “He can’t even enjoy his two weeks off,” she said, loud enough for him to hear. Seth’s response was spot on.
He writes “Isn’t it sad that we have a job where we spend two weeks avoiding the stuff we have to do fifty weeks a year?”
What if it were different? What if we designed a life that we didn’t need to escape? What if we couldn’t wait to wake up Monday and do our work?
Yeah, I can’t wait for my vacation, I’m gonna get so much work done!
